2025 -2026

Spring Term

Year 1 dotty painting

Year 1 focused on Yayoi Kusama and created their own colourful and polka dot pieces of art work.

Year 3 Printing

Year 3 planned a piece of artwork in the style of Andy Warhol.  They used printing tiles to create their piece.

Year 6 Katsushika Hokusai

Autumn Term

Year 6 Henry Moore

Year 6 visited the Henry Moore studios and gardens and were given a guided tour where we learnt even more about his life, how he was inspired by nature when designing his sculptures and we were allowed to look inside his studio.

After lunch, we carried out some observational drawings of his sculptures, which we used to help us design our own sculptures which we will be making next week.

The staff and volunteer guides commented on how well-behaved, knowledgeable and articulate our children were and Mrs Shergill, Mrs Cornish and Mrs Robbins were very proud of them all.

Year 5 Autumn Term

This term Year 5 have been learning about the artist Kara Walker and have been making prints inspired by her work.

Year 4 Pablo Picasso

Year 4 explored portraits and the red and blue periods of Pablo Picasso in their art lessons this term.

Year 3  Stone Age cave paintings

As part of our learning about the Stone Age, Year 3 explored and then created their own Stone Age cave paintings.

Year 2 Autumn Term

This term Year 2 have been exploring patterns. We have looked at different designers who include patterns in their work such as William Morris and Cath Kidston. We have created patterns by extending some existing patterns and had a go at making our own patterns on Purple Mash.

Year 1 Autumn Term

Year 1 have been focusing on printing this term. They created their own patterns on polystyrene tiles and printed them together to create a giant class dinosaur!

Early Years Autumn Term

This term our wonderful Nursery and Reception classes have worked hard to produce some super self portraits! They carefully mixed the right colours and made sure to think about the colours that they needed to represent themselves.

Wicked Competition October 2025

This month children at Trotts Hill had the chance to enter an exciting competition - to design the black card for the upcoming film 'Wicked - For Good'. We were so impressed by the quality of the entries and all of them were sent off to be judged by the British Film Institute. Internally the Creative Crew judged the entries, and the winner was Millie P in Year 5. Well done to everyone who entered!

Curriculum Maps

Intent

Trotts Hill believes that art is an integral part of children’s education. Art has a significant and valuable role in providing an enriched curriculum to the pupils. The art curriculum develops children’s critical abilities and understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of artists. Children are engaged, inspired and challenged to use different skills to invent, experiment, create and criticise their own works of art.

Implementation

Children will develop their understanding of art and design with effective teaching, sequences of lessons and experiences both in school and between link schools. In Key Stage 2 children have the opportunity to meet real artists. Children have an opportunity to participate in art projects in their local community. Understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form) will be developed by providing a curriculum which will enable children to reach their full potential. This is through cross curricular learning. We teach a skills-based art curriculum, which gives opportunities for children to express their creative imagination as well as practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture. Each child has a sketch book to show their creative journey throughout each topic. The sketch books also give opportunity to show the progression of skills and coverage of different artists. Staff and governors meet termly to show case the different elements of learning and skills taught throughout the key stages.

Impact

Art contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection. Through use of sketch book children are able to clearly show their journey of learning and progression of skills learned in each year group. Each link to an artist or experience is integrated in their sequenced learning. Through the progression of skills, all children have a broad experience of art and design, and are able to improve their mastery of techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials. The arts mark has recognised the broad and varied art curriculum in our school.

Art Competitions: Colour the Underpass Competition

Colour in the Underpass

Last year, Trotts Hill proudly participated in the thrilling ‘Colour in the Underpass’ competition, which saw an incredible 950+ entries from 19 schools across Stevenage!

The judging panel had a tough task on their hands, as the quality of the artwork was exceptional. After much deliberation, the following talented children emerged as the winners! Their vibrant creations will soon be featured as part of a stunning new display at the Martins Way/Hitchin Road roundabout underpasses—bringing colour and creativity to the heart of our community.

This spring, there will be a special unveiling event to celebrate their amazing work, offering everyone a chance to admire the new artwork and capture some memorable photos.
